Movie Research Blog: The Purge (2013)

What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? -

Some of the conventions included in the movie The Purge that I have decided to use in my final task include a variety of different things. The unusual storyline, unpredictability of events, the element of surprise, and unidentifiable “bad guys or monster. The director's choice to add an unusual twist to a horror genre is effective and interesting.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you liked? -

Conventions of the movie that attracted me to it were the unusual interactions between characters, the effective use of props, and the interesting plot of the film. The director of this movie made decisions that helped his film be better than a typical horror flick. With the use of a completely new and diverse storyline, the producer creates a film that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. I found his use of props, including masks, hatchets, and axes to be out of the realm of typical movie weapons.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you and you are thinking of not filming for your final task? -

Some of my biggest dislikes of this movie were the plot, the lack of empathy from the bad guys, and the ‘every man for himself’ attitude that the main characters had. The fact that the idea of 12 hours a year allowing murder and mayhem, even in a movie plot, is disturbing and certainly not something to be encouraged in an already numb world. The lack of empathy from the main characters as someone is screaming for help outside their property and the plea goes ignored until the daughter lets the victim into the house, and the lack of empathy by the bad guys as they kill at will with no remorse or feeling. They seem to enjoy the thrill of the kill which is very disturbing.
