 What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? -  

The titles are displayed on dirty parchment paper, portraying a theme that has prevailed through time. The number 23 identifies with several horrific occurrences throughout history such as the Salem Witch Trials, and many other supernatural happenings. The font used in the titles is broken and unclear, setting up a feeling of dread for the viewers.  

 

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? -  

The images that are focused on in the title design show a back story connected to the number 23, which is are many moments in time that signify the repetition of atrocities that should have never happened. As the images progress, blood appears, splatters, and then spreads to cover the page completely. 

 

How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset? - 

The feeling of horror is established from the outset through effective imagery with the use of parchment paper, cryptic font, and blood to capture the viewer’s attention. The use of events written on the parchment paper with reference to the number 23 foreshadows what is to come.
